links dioxins - a by-product of waste burning - to cancer.
We hope that the new evidence on dioxins will make the
Government stop and think about environmentally sound
and people-friendly ways of dealing with medical waste
problem rather than opting for cancer-causing incinerators."
Medical waste incineration is a significant source of
dioxin and heavy metal emissions to the environment.
The recently released US EPA report has solidified these
dioxins' status as one of the most potent chemicals
poisons known to science.
The general public to demand a 'Right to Know' basis
about the kinds of waste management technologies proposed
to be adopted by the Government. "People should
realize that the regulatory agencies entrusted with
protecting the environment and the people are either
not up-to-par technically; or are seemingly unconcerned
about these issues. A concerted effort to educate the
regulating authorities and to reassert the people's
right to a clean environment is absolutely mandatory
if Pakistan is to escape from the garbage-cancer trap.
