Medical Waste Burning Poses High Cancer Risk

Latest US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) document that links dioxins - a by-product of waste burning - to cancer. We hope that the new evidence on dioxins will make the Government stop and think about environmentally sound and people-friendly ways of dealing with medical waste problem rather than opting for cancer-causing incinerators."

Medical waste incineration is a significant source of dioxin and heavy metal emissions to the environment. The recently released US EPA report has solidified these dioxins' status as one of the most potent chemicals poisons known to science.
The general public to demand a 'Right to Know' basis about the kinds of waste management technologies proposed to be adopted by the Government. "People should realize that the regulatory agencies entrusted with protecting the environment and the people are either not up-to-par technically; or are seemingly unconcerned about these issues. A concerted effort to educate the regulating authorities and to reassert the people's right to a clean environment is absolutely mandatory if Pakistan is to escape from the garbage-cancer trap.
