| Polluting three-wheelers
reined in |
| |
 |
In
a significant development, the Punjab and Haryana
High Court has issued directions to check the vehicular
pollution on the roads, regulate the movement of
the school buses, take action against the petrol
pumps selling adulterated petrol and diesel, and
set right the functioning of the civic bodies, like
public health department, PWD, etc. |
|
| |
| As a first step
to implement the directions of the High Court, issued
to the governments of Haryana, Punjab, and Union Territory
of Chandigarh, the Faridabad district administration has
launched a drive against the auto-rickshaws, causing unbearable
pollution and traffic anarchy on the roads of this town.
|
| |
| Majority of the
three-wheelers, fitted with diesel engines, use diesel
and kerosene as fuel, which causes lot of pollution. |
| |
| But protesting against
the police action against them, about 10000 auto-rickshaw
went off the road strike last week. Since the public and
media supported the action of the administration vis-à-vis
auto-rickshaws, their owners perforce called off the strike
and agreed to observe traffic rules and pollution norms.
|
| |
| In another order,
the High Court has set guidelines for the school buses.
The guidelines envisaged that every school bus should
have lawful permit, fitness certificate, insurance and
a trained driver having a minimum five-year experience.
|
| |
| Any driver found
guilty of violating traffic rules thrice should be declared
unfit to drive school buses. The directions further envisage
that the school buses should drop children inside the
school campus, and should not ply at a speed of more than
50 km/ph. |
